These books record the name, address, date of admission and notes about each church member (usually their date of death or how they left the church), and assign them a unique number. The later register also contains the date membership ceased (sometimes, but not always, included in the 'remarks' section of the earlier register). Both registers have indexes, although that of the later register is only partial. For the registers of church members for Salem Chapel, including those who moved from Lendal to Salem in 1839 to form the first congregation, see SAL 3/1.
