Scope and Content

Manuscript menu on very thin balsa wood. The base comprises four layers of paper-thin balsa wood. It is decorated with hand painting on one side. A wash of blue-grey translucent paint creates a border along the left and top edges onto which are painted two small brown birds and the suggestion of a pine tree branch, with some white highlights. A menu list is manuscript in black ink in the remaining space. The reverse has been signed or initialled by approximately twelve people, in black ink, and dated. Inserted between pages of a diary, Jan 1912. Owned by H Pearl Adam

Note: the diary entry for 13 Jan 1912 reads: 'We came home to the most exquisite 7-course meal cooked by TWP & M O'f. Quite perfect. Broke up about 1.' M O'f may be __ O'forman below.

Physical Characteristics and/or Technical Requirements

Poor condition. Layers of balsa wood separating, outer layers beginning to disintegrate, some missing top right (front). Paint faded. Front, wood has darkened right side, dirty marks, possible slight mould growth (grey) . Reverse, very dirty right side, possibly some mould growth (grey). Very delicate but stable. Slight repair needed. Production method: hand painted in watercolour and manuscript in ink on balsa wood. Photographed by Martin Lello, Nov 2000.
