The letter is sent care of Mr [Joseph] Fenton [uncle, with whom Kay was living and working]. Penny says he is pleased to hear of his position in Blackburn and he congratulates him on the birth of his new baby brother [Joseph Kay]. He talks of his own situation and says he is happy living with the Charnand family. He emphasises how much he values Jem's friendship. He describes Smyrna and says he hopes to visit Ephesus, although he says the revolution is making travel difficult. He plans to visit Homer's Grotto, the village of [Nymphu] and the Lake of Tantalus. He talks of visiting Constantinople later in the year and gives a description of the character of The Turk as translated from Ali Bey's travels.
