He lists the "country duties" that he and Blanche [wife] have become involved in at Gawthorpe. These include starting a laundry, creating a kitchen-garden, and playing in cricket matches. He says that now Blanche is feeling a little better they have made more visits and have been on more drives. They are also are entertaining more guests. He talks of the governors of the Grammar School, the Local Board of Padiham, and the Burnley Bench. He also says he is taking a interest in the workhouse in terms of arranging to have a trained nurse there.
