Scope and Content

J. Whitaker. Letter to Dr James Phillips Kay M.D. (Mosley Street, Manchester, Lancashire).

Dated at: Burley, near Otley [North Yorkshire].

He informs Kay that subject to a letter from Mr [Briggs] he is handling Kay's query regarding the health of the [cotton manufacturing] workforce in the employ of Messrs. Greenwood Whitaker. He gives some statistics around deaths and reports that generally the record is good. As proof, he attaches a memorandum written on behalf of the 376 workers in the factory, which was presented to the House of Commons. In it they claim that they have no complaint about the hours they work and the conditions that they work in. The memorandum is accompanied by a petition detailing workers' names, ages and days of sickness.
