Royal School for Naval and Marine Officers' Daughters

Scope and Content

The Royal School for Naval and Marine Officers' Daughters Collection consists of an album of photographs and notes recording the activities of the members of Hawke House, one of the School's houses. The album records life at Hawke House during Mary Chapple's time as House Mistress. It includes photographs of pupils, staff, and drama performances, lists of House members and sports team members, sports results, and extracts from 'The Victory', the magazine of the Royal Naval Female School.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Royal Naval Female School was founded in 1840 on Richmond Green as a boarding school for the orphaned daughters of Navy officers. In 1857 it moved to St Margaret's House, between the Thames and Kilmorey Road, which was then part of Isleworth. By the 1930s the school was also admitting day girls as well as girls who were not from naval families. One of the school's houses, Hawke House, was formed in 1934 and was comprised of girls from Grenville and Drake senior houses as well as from the Junior House. Mary Chapple taught at the school and was the House Mistress for Hawke House from 1934 until 1939 when she married Hugh Lapage and moved to Great Abington, Cambridgeshire. In 1941, St Margaret's House was damaged by bombing and the school moved to Haslemere. In 1995 it merged with the Grove School and became the Royal School, catering for girls and boys.
