Scope and Content

The collection comprises:

Manuscripts of papers and articles written by Professor Shone concerning aspects of medical administration. 1961-1974 (Sh 1/1);

Manuscripts of papers and articles by other authors, some are of unknown authorship and may be written by Professor Shone. 1953-1974 (Sh 1/2);

Manuscripts of speeches given by Professor Shone. 1962-1974 (Sh 2);

Correspondence between Professor Shone and the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board, the Ministry of Health, Lincoln Rotary club, the Women's Voluntary Service, the University of Nottingham and the Australian College of Medical Administrators. 1958-1971 (Sh 3);

Collection of reports from various regional health bodies including the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board, the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Sub-Regional Planning Unit, the Nottinghamshire Area Health Authority, and the University of Nottingham. Also includes miscellaneous reports collected by Professor Shone. 1948-1975 (Sh 4/1 - 4/5);

Statistics tables relating to various elements of hospital and medical administration from the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board and Nottinghamshire Hospitals. Also includes some national statistics. 1953-1974 (Sh 5/1 - 5/3)

Minutes and papers from the Joint Liaison Committee, including the minutes and papers of the Joint Working Groups 1-9 that formed the Joint Liaison Committee. 1972-1974 (Sh 6);

Minutes and papers from the Nottinghamshire Area Health Authority, including minutes from meeting of the Trent Regional Health Authority, and minutes and related papers from meetings of the District Hospital Medical Executive Committee. 1974-1976 (Sh 7/1 and Sh 7/2);

Miscellaneous papers relating to hospital administration including course and seminar materials, miscellaneous minutes and agendas and various brochures collected by Professor Shone. 1952-1976 (Sh 8/1-8/3)

Administrative / Biographical History

Professor Sam Shone was Senior Administrative Medical Officer to the Sheffield Regional Hospital Board until his retirement in March 1971. He was a member of the Board of Medical Studies for The University of Nottingham from November 1967 and a member of the Board of the Faculty of Medicine between that date and May 1975. On his retirement from the health service, Professor Shone held a part-time appointment in the university for 4 years as Professor of Medical Administration. During this period, and indeed from 1965 onwards while still Senior Administrative Medical Officer, Professor Shone made a significant input into the development of a new medical school. He died on 1 January 1986.

Custodial History

The collection was transferred to The University of Nottingham's Department of Manuscripts in January 1996 from the medical library at the Queen's Medical Centre, Nottingham.
