Scope and Content

From Maria Littlehales in West Hatch, Surrey, to [Charles Wesley], thanking him for his kind wishes 'that my poor dear boys might escape the corruption of a publick school'. Ben was sent to Harrow, Middlesex, 'which is almost as publick as the two great schools' much to Maria's distress. Ned is to stay at Marylebone for two or three years longer, before entering Westminster school. Her trust is that God 'will preserve them both in the midst of that fiery furnace'.

She thanks him for the two hymns, especially the second. She has also enclosed one of those hymns that Mr Arnold sent for Laura, who has been very lazy in not writing to Sally.

Charles's move to London is a source of great joy to her.

Mr Green is to be declared bankrupt next week. Maria is very concerned for him and his poor children. Wesley's friend Mr Galatin has been very good to them in this time of trouble.

She does not like to hear Wesley talking of dying.
