Bound volume containing copies of letters to Butterfield & Swire regarding the China Navigation Company and House management and affairs - including the continued debate on the opening of a dockyard at Hong Kong (1881) and the amalgamation of China Navigation Company and Coast Boats Ownery in 1883; extensive correspondence about China Conference agreements and with Holt's about Ocean Streamship Company [OSSCo] trade and management, the development of a Pacific route, insurance company problems and trade with Australia. In September 1883 John S Swire began a tour of the East and in his absence F R Gamwell conducted the London end of the business and correspondence
