Typescript of his autobiography. 40 pages. Reveals much about linen manufacturing in Belfast (and more generally in Northern Ireland) in the early and mid-nineteenth century. Also long description of life as a merchant based oversees in the tropics drawing on Bell's experiences in Maranhao in Brazil (c1840-1). Account also includes his apprenticeship at a cotton spinners, and his work as a manager for a flax merchant.

Timothy Bell was born in Lurgan into a Quaker family. He was apprenticed to John Bell and Co., cotton spinners. He was sent to Maranhao, Brazil in c1841 and he remained there for eighteen months. He later worked as a manager for John Finlay, the flax merchant. Bell set up his own business and emigrated to the United States.
