Scope and Content

From Katherine Whitmore in Cotsbrook to Mary Tooth in Madeley. She trusts that Tooth arrived safe last Sunday without suffering much in the way of fatigue 'from your charitable exertions'.

She hopes that Tooth and [Mary] Fletcher do not think her impertinent in making this suggestion, but 'might it not be prudent before the prayer meeting to get [unreadable two words] cottage licensed [as a dissenters meeting house]. I have heard it is easily done, and without expense, but the ways and means I know not, but of course well-known to your preachers. It is possible no molestation may arise, yet I think from the character of many in this neighbourhood, offence may be taken and all the desired good crushed in the bud, while the few anxious for salvation may be involved with difficulties and troubles. I do not write from anything I have heard ... from those who would oppose, I suspect we are regarded as foolish enthusiastic, troublesome old women'. Tooth should excuse her, if she thinks that she is over-cautious.
