Scope and Content

South African political papers mostly relating to the radical political opposition, including: correspondence and affidavits obtained by the Liberal Party on interference with mail, 1955; copies of banning orders and exit permits; African National Congress ephemera (including Treason Trial Bulletin no. 13, May 1961); material on the Prohibition of Improper Interference Bill and the dissolution of the Liberal Party 1968; articles, manuscripts and SALP memoranda on detention and banning of Party members 1964-1967; documents submitted by Marion Friedmann, Mary Benson and the SALP to the UN Special Committee on Apartheid; 'The policy of separate development with special reference to the Transkei' (typescript, 130pp.).

Marion Friedmann was a member of the Liberal Party of South Africa before she left South Africa in 1962 and moved to London.

The press cuttings (FRI/A) are arranged by subject: South African labour disturbances, trades unions, finance, wages, immigrants, international role, defence, political parties, Verkramptes/Verligtes, foreign policy, arms sales, etc.
