Six page circular letter from Thornton B Penfield Junior to Mrs Impey, with handwritten additions, written from Colombo, Ceylon, describing travelling in India. Descriptons of Darjeeling, Benares, Agra, Delhi and Ahmedabad where he writes about meeting Gandhi’s son at his Ashram and Gandhi’s work including his fasting as penance for Hindu-Muslim riots. Includes references to poverty, caste problems and the need for independence. Handwritten PS says ‘ may each of your days be as happy as ours together has been on the SS Oxfordshire’
