The speech illustrates the attitude towards women of education and ability 100 years ago, and refers to a ‘succession of brilliant and talented women’ including Florence Nightingale, Sophia Jex Blake, Elizabeth Garrett, Josephine Butler and Elizabeth Fry and the founders of the North London Collegiate School, Cheltenham College and Girton, the ‘living memorial to Emily Davies’; the results of Dame Christabel’s work are that just under 100 women had been elected to Parliament, many more had had a profound effect on legislation, and women are no longer discriminated against in employment
