The material in this series relates mostly to the publication 'British and Irish paintings in public collections : an index of British and Irish oil paintings by artists born before 1870 in public and institutional collections in the United Kingdom and Ireland'. The lists in this series were bound by Christopher Wright before transfer to the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art in 1998. The bound volumes are comprised, in the main, of original material, although there are some published catalogues which have been included. The order of the lists within the volumes is mostly alphabetical by place name.
