Scope and Content

Correspondence with Harley Granville-Barker (1877-1946), theatre director and playwright, relating to a request by Scott that Granville-Barker write a notice of the Exhibition of Dramatic Art in the [Manchester] Art Gallery for publication in the Manchester Guardian, which is accepted, with discussion of arrangements. Also included is a request that Scott add his signature to a letter of appeal to secure a civil list pension for William Poel, actor, director and author, which is accepted.

There are requests from Scott for articles and letters by Granville-Barker on the encroachment of the entertainment tax upon educational activities, on censorship and possible approaches to censorship, and for [an article on the National Theatre] for publication in the Manchester Guardian, accompanied by discussions of each subject, which are declined.

There is correspondence relating to discussion of [a complaint] by Granville-Barker over an opinion expressed by [Ivor] Brown, theatre critic and writer, and a letter between Scott and Brown discussing the subject.
