Scope and Content

Correspondence with Sir (Charles Otto) Desmond MacCarthy (1877-1952), literary reviewer and drama critic, relating to an offer by MacCarthy to act as a correspondent for the Manchester Guardian in Ireland, which is accepted, with discussion of terms of employment, potential articles and proposed interviews MacCarthy intends to conduct, accompanied by related internal memoranda. There is discussion of the recommendation of MacCarthy by [John?] Masefield, [poet and novelist]. There is correspondence relating to MacCarthy's intention to write about the Sinn Fein administration, the curfew in Dublin, and internment camps, with reference to his intended travels around Ireland, and a request for the provision of letters of credential by the Manchester Guardian. There are requests for articles, and discussion of the current situation in Ireland.

There is correspondence relating to the provision of thanks for MacCarthy for a death notice written for Geoffrey Scott, writer and architect, and nephew of C.P. Scott.
