Scope and Content

Correspondence with Michael S. Farbman (1880-1933), journalist, relating to the employment of Farbman to write a series of 12 articles on current events and politics in Russia for publication in the Manchester Guardian, with discussion of subjects for articles, arrangements for receiving them, form and payment, and extra payment for special articles, accompanied by related internal memoranda.

There is correspondence relating to the employment of Farbman as a Russian correspondent for the Manchester Guardian on several occasions, for three month intervals, with discussion of terms, the work required, and the exclusivity of the arrangement. Also included is discussion of an offer by Farbman of important documents procured on a visit to Russia on recent Russian and world politics, for publication in the Manchester Guardian, which are accepted, and a request by Scott for an article on Russian policy with relation to Constantinople and the Straits.

There is correspondence relating to the termination of a formal arrangement between Farbman and the Manchester Guardian, accompanied by internal memoranda discussing payment of Farbman, and coverage of Farbman's work by other correspondents, including [F.A.] Voigt and [Arthur] Ransome. Also included is discussion of continuing to accept special articles from Farbman on an occasional basis.

There are letters of introduction from Scott for Farbman to [Sir Ernest Emil Darwin]Simon, industrialist and politician, and [W.E.] Thompson, at the [Manchester] Chamber [of Commerce], with reference to generating support and interest in the third volume of Europa, co-edited by Farbman.
