Papers of James Cunningham (fl 1781)

Scope and Content

Lectures, notes and extracts on botany, farming and husbandry, compiled by James Cunningham, c 1781.

The collection includes lectures on botany delivered by Dr John Hope (1725 - 1786), Professor of Botany, University of Edinburgh, from 9 May 1774, and transcribed by James Cunningham, May 1781 (p 1 - 134), with additional notes on plants and general view of botany from Dr Hope's lectures (p 323 - 329); an abstract of Dr Hope's lectures (p 330 - 332); and alphabetical list of the vegetables and experiments on them and mentioned in Dr Hope's lectures (p 333 - 340).

Further contents include directions for planting forest trees by Murdoch Middleton - who had been employed by many Noblemen and Gentlemen to plant their trees and take care of them when planted, n.d.(p 135 - 138); lectures on Vegetation and Agriculture by William Cullen (1710-1790), physician, Edinburgh, including lecture Of Marles, from a manuscript of Dr Cullen , n.d. (p 217 - 244); and A Treatise on the Norfolk husbandry, drawn for the use of the Earl of Hopton and transmitted to his Lordship from Norfolk, Anno 1760 - found among my Father's papers (249 - 255).

Pages 141 - 216 and 257 - 322 are missing from the volume.
