The National Joint Committee for Spanish Relief was formed to provide humanitarian aid to Spain after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. It was active in the period 1937-40.

The file forms part of the papers of the late Wilfrid Roberts (1900-91), Liberal MP for North Cumberland 1935-50, and a leading figure in the Basque Children's Committee and other Spanish relief bodies. The Centre's thanks are due to Wilfrid Roberts' daughter, Mrs Joanna Matthews, for kindly depositing the papers and to Dr A. Bell (UEA) for acting as intermediary. The papers were deposited on indefinite loan in the Centre in 1991-2.
