Scope and Content

Edward Peacock compiled his diaries irregularly, with frequent daily entries interspersed with gaps of up to several months. The diaries contain detailed accounts of his daily activities, journeys and events in his household and locality. There are also numerous antiquarian notes. Volume 1 covers the years 1860-1868, with the last third of the volume being blank. Volume 2 covers the years 1868-1882, but Peacock has reused an old volume, the pages of which are watermarked 1824. The volume begins with a list of the best editions of classical authors according to Hammond and [Thomas Frognall] Dibdin, following by "Select Sentences", being a collection of aphorisms and quotations on various topics. These were probably compiled in the 1820s.
