Carneddi and Bethesda British Schools in Caernarfonshire, north Wales were part of the British and Foreign School movement which began with the founding of the British and Foreign School Society in 1814. This aimed to establish elementary schools with a non-denominational ethos as the existing National School system was associated with the Established Church. Hugh Owen (1804-1881) of Llangeinwen, Anglesey campaigned for the setting up of British Schools in Wales to meet the needs of children from non-conformist backgrounds who it was felt were not being catered for by the National Schools which taught Established Church doctrine. On August 26, 1843, he published a letter to the people of Wales strongly advocating the necessity for day schools. In November 1843, he was responsible for the appointment of a North Wales agent for the British and Foreign Schools Society and, later, another one for South Wales.
