The Bill Beswick Papers

The papers included in this collection cover Beswick’s experiences at the University of Manchester; starting with his medical education at the University in the 1940s, to lecturing in physiology at the University, to his progression to the Dean of Medicine and, later, Bursar. The papers also include research he conducted into his personal interests, and also includes his personal recollections which offer a narrative component to complement the collection.

Frederic Bramwell Beswick is a physician and educational administrator, generally known as Bill Beswick. After qualifying, Bill Beswick held a number of appointments at Ancoats Hospital before being appointed as demonstrator in physiology at the University of Manchester in 1951. In 1954 he was appointed lecturer in experimental physiology, and was then promoted to senior lecturer in 1965. From 1966 he was Associate Dean of the Medical School, becoming executive Dean in 1969. It was during that time that the idea for a new medical school was proposed. Beswick played a major role in the development of the new Medical School, which built between 1969 and 1973, and was formerly opened by Lord Todd in September 1973.In 1980 Beswick was appointed Bursar to the University of Manchester. From 1966 to 1984 Beswick was also an honorary lecturer in physiology, before becoming chairman of the Salford Health Authority.

• FBB/7 Miscellaneous-Correspondence, photographs, research and ephemera collected and/or created by Beswick.
• FBB/8 Memoirs and Recollections-A collection of typed notes about Beswick's time at the University of Manchester, as well as general history about the University and it's staff.

The collection is open to any accredited reader unless otherwise stated.

The collection includes material which is subject to the Data Protection Act 2018. Under the Act 2018 (DPA), The University of Manchester Library (UML) holds the right to process personal data for archiving and research purposes. In accordance with the DPA, UML has made every attempt to ensure that all personal and sensitive personal data has been processed fairly, lawfully and accurately. Users of the archive are expected to comply with the Data Protection Act 2018, and will be required to sign a form acknowledging that they will abide by the requirements of the Act in any further processing of the material by themselves.

Open parts of this collection, and the catalogue descriptions, may contain personal data about living individuals. Some items in this collection may be closed to public inspection in line with the requirements of the DPA. Restrictions/closures of specific items will be indicated in the catalogue.

Donated by Bill Beswick between 2001 and 2003. Some of the material was donated directly to the University Library, and some was initially given to the Museum of Medicine and Health. The latter material was transferred to the University Library in 2016, and is now treated as part of the same collection.

Photocopies and photographic copies of material in the archive can be supplied for private study purposes only, depending on the condition of the documents.
