Central Labour College, North Eastern branch

This collection contains: minutes of Executive Committee of the North of England branch of the Central Labour College, London, 1917-1922; minutes of the Executive Committee and annual meetings of the North Eastern Labour College, 1925-1933; Council of Labour Colleges: Darlington and District, labour class register.

The Central Labour College was founded in 1909 as a result of the Ruskin College strike. Its two principal trade union supporters were the National Union of Railwaymen and the South Wales Miners' Federation. In 1911 it moved to London and acquired an extension in Kew in 1920. The college closed in 1929.

Craik, 'The Central Labour College 1909-1929' (London. 1964) explains the evolution of local tutorial classes or "Labour Colleges" and the establishment of the National Council of Labour Colleges in 1922 as a co-ordinating body.
