Administrative / Biographical History
Heinemann Educational Books Ltd was formed in 1961 when what had previously been the educational department of the UK publisher William Heinemann Ltd was re-organised as a separate company. The new company operated a number of international offices, including in Ibadan and Nairobi. Heinemann Educational Books was responsible for the publication of the Heinemann African Writers Series (from 1962) and Heinemann Caribbean Writers Series (from 1970).
In 1985, William Heinemann Ltd and Heinemann Educational Books Ltd were acquired by Octopus Publishing. Octopus was in turn taken over by Reed Books in 1987. In 1997, William Heinemann Ltd was sold to Random House, however, Heinemann Educational remained part of the Reed Elsevier group, as an imprint of Harcourt Education International. Harcourt Education International (including the African Writers Series) was sold by Reed Elsevier in 2007 to the publisher Pearson.
The collection is arranged into five series: African Writers Series [HEB/AWS]; Caribbean Writers Series [HEB/CWS]; Studies in African Literature [HEB/SAL]; Secondary Readers [HEB/SER]; and miscellaneous Heinemann Educational Books publications relating to Africa [HEB/MISC].
