Committee minute book, 1846-1897.

Holyhead British School in Anglesey, northWales was part of the British and Foreign School movement whichbegan with the founding of the British and Foreign School Society in1814. This aimed to establish elementary schools with anon-denominational ethos as the existing National School systemwas associated with the Established Church. Hugh Owen(1804-1881) of Llangeinwen, Anglesey campaigned for the settingup of British Schools in Wales to meet the needs of children fromnon-conformist backgrounds who it was felt were not being cateredfor by the National Schools which taught Established Churchdoctrine. On August 26, 1843, he published a letter to the people ofWales strongly advocating the necessity for day schools. InNovember 1843, he was responsible for the appointment of a NorthWales agent for the British and Foreign Schools Society and, later,another one for South Wales.
