Scope and Content

Artworks by Peter Evershed, including portraits of Dorothy Brett, Frieda Lawrence and Dylan Thomas painted in the early 1950s. Also present are two watercolour sketches of locations in Nottingham and Derby, executed in 1991.

Administrative / Biographical History

Peter Evershed was born on 5 February 1925. He spent almost all of the 1950s in America,primarily in New York where he associated with numerous artistic, jazz and literary personalities.In the early 1950s he was attached to a New York Gallery and met Dorothy Brett there when she washolding an exhibition. He later visited her in Taos, New Mexico where he met and painted FriedaLawrence, the widow of writer, D.H. Lawrence. Evershed also met Frieda at Aldous Huxley's home inCalifornia. Other literary figures painted by Evershed have included Dylan Thomas and W.H.Auden.

Evershed has lived most of his life in England and resided for a time in Derby. His portraits andlandscape scenes have been acquired by galleries and libraries world-wide, including the Universityof Texas and the National Gallery of Wales.

Arrangement

The collection has been divided into two series bringing like documents together. Series one comprises portraits; series two contains landscape sketches and other paintings.
