Scope and Content

LETTERS: Thomas Evans, [agent], Caernarfon to the Bursar re Holyhead accounts.

In an 1825 letter he refers to the poor rates of Holyhead being so high in consequence of the Packets [ships] paying no rates whereas the sailing Packets paid over £300 per year.

The mariners who were employed had been paid off and were too old to go abroad, 'their families are a great burthen and there were so many casual paupers coming to work at the pier and Irish vagrants.
