Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Lyttelton Times first appeared on 11 January 1851 and was edited by James Edward Fitzgerald. It was published weekly until 1854, when it was published twice weekly. In 1863, the firm moved from Lyttelton to Christchurch although the name of the paper remained the same until August 1929 when it was renamed The Christchurch Times. The newspaper began as a non-partisan paper, but under William Pember Reeves, its editor from 1889, it soon became one of the leading Liberal newspapers, remaining so throughout the remainder of its history. The Christchurch Times ceased publication in June 1935.
