Administrative / Biographical History
This was a community and education centre established by Sir Alec Clegg, the Chief Education Officer of West Riding County Council in 1970. It was housed in the former mine-manager's house in Tickhill Square, Denaby Main, purchased with funds provided by the Rowntree Trust. Its aim was to provide 'compensatory education' in an Educational Priority Area through direct and indirect support for local school and by social work for the residents of Denaby Main and Conisbrough.
The Centre was transferred to the Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council following local government re-organisation in April 1974. Within Doncaster MBC, responsibility for the Centre was transferred from the Directorate of Education to Social Services in 1979.
The Centre was financed partly through Doncaster MBC and partly through grants from the Urban Aid scheme funded by central government. The ending of Urban Aid funding led to the closure of the Centre in July 1986.
