Correspondence from Sophia Fielding

Scope and Content

Sophia Fielding (1748-1815) was the daughter of Lady Charlotte Finch (HAM/1/12). She married Commodore Charles Fielding in 1772 and they had four children. From 1779 until 1815, Fielding held the position of 'Woman of Bedchamber' to Queen Charlotte.

In this sub-subseries Fielding writes on behalf of Lady Charlotte Finch, with regards to Hamilton's post as sub-governess and with a command from the Queen to be presented to her the following evening. Other pieces relate to Hamilton's friend, Lady Dartrey (HAM/1/11) and Fielding writing to arrange to wait on Hamilton. Fielding also writes of her experience at being taken 'prisoner' by an American ship (see HAM/1/12/32) on her way home to England and on the health of her brother, Lord Winchilsea who was in Lisbon.
