Scope and Content

Pinter Archive. 'The Room'; 1957. Typewritten. The play was written in four days during Nov. 1956. First staged at The Drama Studio, University of Bristol, May 1957, directed by Henry Woolf and then at Hampstead Theatre, 21 Jan. 1960, directed by Harold Pinter. First published as The Birthday Party, and other plays Methuen (1960). The University of Bristol Theatre Collection holds production slides and prints for the first production (reference BDD/000414). The British Library holds papers relating to the licensing of the play (LCP CORR 1958/969 and LC PLAYS 1958/20). The British Library sound archive holds recordings of interviews with original cast members made in 2007 (reference C1142/86-87).

1. Two scripts originally belonging to Henry Woolf, used as production copies. One has autograph stage directions, the other is incomplete; 1957.
