Administrative / Biographical History

Pontypool and Panteg Urban District Councils (UDCs), Monmouthshire, were established under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894. UDCs comprised councillors and a chairman who were elected for three years. Their many responsibilities included cemeteries and parks. On 1 April 1935 the two councils, along with Abersychan UDC, were merged with the resultant Pontypool UDC being abolished following Local Government reorganisation in 1974.
