Photographs and accompanying captions depicting Ken Coates' life and career, which were played as a slideshow during the lecture, showing Ken Coates throughout his life. Includes photographs of protest marches, his time as a miner and as a student and academic at the University of Nottingham, his parliamentary work, meetings with famous individuals including the Dalai Lama, Nelson Mandela, Fyodor Burlatsky, and Tony Benn, etc.

Administrative / Biographical History

The inaugural Ken Coates Memoral Lecture was held at the University of Nottingham on 3rd June 2015, given by Frances O'Grady, General Secretary of the Trades Union Congress, and entitled 'The Future of the Left - where next for Britain's labour movement?'. Introductory speakers were Tom Unterrainer, and Tony Simpson, editor of The Spokesman, journal of the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation, and a director of Russell Press printers, who spoke about Ken Coates and his legacy. The talks were followed by questions from the audience.

Arrangement

Material relating to further memorial lectures will be added to this collection periodically. There was no memorial lecture in 2016.
