Administrative / Biographical History

Captain Matthew Francis (1840-1925) was the manager of Halkyn Mining Co. and South Halkyn & Rhydymwyn Mining Company, Flintshire, and acted for other companies, including Pantymwyn Mining Co., Llynypandy, Holywell-Halkyn Mining & Tunnel Co., Halkyn District Mines Drainage Co., and Shropshire Lead Mines Ltd. Halkyn Mountain was one of the most important lead and zinc ore fields in Wales. In 1897, the Holywell-Halkyn Mining and Tunnel Company was formed by a group of companies, which began to drive the Milwr Tunnel from the Dee Estuary at Bagillt in order to reduce the water table of Halkyn Mountain and thus allow deeper mining. In the mid 1970s, mining ended.
