Administrative / Biographical History
The firm of R. Graesser Ltd. was founded in 1867 by R.F. Graesser, a German-born chemist, who established a factory at Acrefair, Ruabon, to produce phenol in collaboration with a Mr Crowther, a Manchester lawyer. The partnership was later broken and the firm subsequently traded as R. Graesser Ltd.
In 1921, a new firm, Graesser Monsanto, was formed to handle Monsanto products in Europe. A vanilli plant was erected and progress was made in developing salicylates. The joint company came to an end in 1928 and Mr N.H. Graesser moved his company to Sandycroft in 1934. A tar acid refining plant was built here which produced phenos, cresols, xylenols, etc. Graesser Salicylates Ltd. were also established on the Sandycroft site. In 1945, E. Graesser Ltd. merged with Lancashire Tar Distillers Ltd.
