Scope and Content

Henry Bradshaw, 'A Half-century of Notes on the Day-Book of John Dorne as edited by F. Madan for the Oxford Historical Society', 32 folios. The volume contains supplementary information upon fifty of the entries in the list of authors and books which appears in Falconer Madan's edition of Dorne's day-book. The notes are preceded by a letter from H. Bradshaw to F. Madan, 30 January 1886, and by a list of the entries illustrated in the notes. They are followed by a supplementary index. Pasted on a fly-leaf at the back is a letter from F. Madan to A. F. Schofield, 20 April 1929.

Administrative / Biographical History

Henry Bradshaw (1831-1886) was born in London on 2 February 1831. He attended Eton, before entering King's College, Cambridge, in 1850 (B.A, 1854; M.A., 1857), where he was Fellow, 1853-1856, and Dean, 1857-1858 and 1863-1865. In 1856 he became Assistant Master at St Columba's College, near Dublin. Thereafter he joined Cambridge University Library, where he was Assistant, 1856-1858, and Superintendent of Manuscripts, 1859-1867. He carried out the reform of the Department of Manuscripts, and served as University Librarian, 1867-1886. Bradshaw died on 11 February 1886.

J. Dorne was a bookseller in Oxford in 1520.

Falconer Madan (1851-1935) was librarian at the Bodleian Library, and a palaeographer and bibliographer.
