Administrative / Biographical History

James G. Olle was born in Portsmouth and attended the Southern Secondary School. He began work in Portsmouth Central Library at the age of sixteen and remained there, apart from wartime service overseas in the Pay Corps and Education Corps (1940-46), until 1951, when he became Chief Reference Librarian at Sheffield. He was appointed a lecturer in Librarianship at Loughborough Technical College in 1957 and after the course was taken over by Loughborough University in the 1960s became a lecturer and senior lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Studies. He was awarded the degree of MA for his published work and retired in 1981.
