The Association was established in 1887. It merged with the Postal Telegraph Clerks' Association in 1914 to form the Postal and Telegraph Clerks' Association.

The archive has been given the classification MSS.148 together with a unique suffix to indicate that it is a constituent part of the papers of the Union of Communication Workers (now itself part of the Communication Workers' Union).
