A rhyme. In days gone by women wore shoes on Sundays only. The shoes were made from hide which had been steeped for a fortnight in a burn, then tanned by the use of the herb 'Cairt Shleamhna' and then stitched with a thong made from the same hide. It took about two hours to stitch a pair of shoes. The rhyme begins, 'Ca-la deug le toll 's le tarruing/Ca-la deug 'sa barraibh fo bonn ....'. By Neil Johnston, Eriskay. Transcribed by Allan McDonald.
