Administrative / Biographical History

Up until the late nineteenth century, revenue from local taxation, rather than central government grants, was the most important source of income for spending on local infrastructure, and in areas such as provision for the poor, education, and highways etc, which were administered by the parish. From the late nineteenth century onwards central government made a greater contribution to local funding.

The county of Denbighshire has undergone changes to its boundaries during local government reorganisation in 1974 and 1996. Material in this collection relates to parishes and administrative divisions in the historic county of Denbighshire, that is, as it was constituted before 1974. It refers to the division of Uwch Mynydd and the parishes of Cerrigydrudion, Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr, Llangwm, Pentrefoelas, Tir Ifan and the townships of Hafod-y-maidd, Llysan, Maesyrodyn, Moelfre, Penyfed, Prys, Tiryrabad Isaf, Tiryrabad Uchaf and Tre-brys.
