Flora Thompson (1876-1947), writer, was born Flora Timms, the daughter of stonemason in Juniper Hill on the Oxfordshire/Northants border. She left school at 14 to work in the village post office at Fringford. After marrying she and her husband ran the post office in Liphook, Hants, where she began to write in order to supplement the family income after she had three children. In 1921 she published her first volume of verse, Bog Myrtle and Peat. The family moved to Devon in 1928. Her acclaimed trilogy of autobiographical novels, Lark Rise (1939), Over to Candleford (1941), and Candleford Green (1943) were reissued as Lark Rise to Candleford in 1945.
