James Mearns, hymnologist, was born in 1855 in Coldstream, Scottish Borders, Scotland. He was educated at the  University of Glasgow, Scotland, and the United Presbyterian College in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was ordained in the Church of England, and subsequently became vicar at Ashby de la Launde, Lincolnshire, England, and at Rushden, Hertfordshire, England. Later he became the rector at Wallington, Hertfordshire. He died in  1922 .
