The collection provides a unique record of the development of hospital and health services in Northern Ireland post NHS inception up to and including hospital and health services reorganisation in 1973.
Assembled as the core of an active library serving and maintained by The Northern Ireland Hospitals Authority, the collection was donated to The Queen's University of Belfast when The Authority was disbanded in 1973. The stock remained active for a further year after which it was closed and consigned to store. Thereafter, a library service was supplied to health service staff from Queen's University Medical Library by arrangement with the Northern Ireland Department of Health and Social Services.
