Secretary of State for India

Note

The 1858 Government of India Act (21&22 Vict. c.106) transferred control of India to the Crown, and moved ministerial responsibility for Indian affairs from the President of the Board of Control to the Secretary of State for India in Council. Sir Charles Wood (previously a President of the Board of Control) became the second Secretary of State for India on 18 June 1859. He held the office until his retirement and the appointment of his successor, the Marquess of Ripon, in February 1866.
