Scope and Content

Meeting papers, correspondence, reports, accounts, circulars, handbooks and related papers of the national Association of University Teachers and its York branch, 1963-1995. Includes reports and accounts concerning the University Superannuation Scheme; strategy documents, campaign materials and related papers concerning industrial actions, parental leave, health and safety at work, sex discrimination and sexist language in universities; papers concerning the AUT and South Africa and Rhodesia under Apartheid.

Administrative / Biographical History

The York Branch of the Association of University Teachers (AUT) was formed c.1965 as a local association of the national AUT. It was a trade union and professional association representing academic and academic related staff at the University of York on matters of pay, pensions and working conditions.
In 2004-2005 the governing body of the York Branch consisted of a Local Executive comprising a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, Membership Secretary, Health and Safety Representative and Equal Opportunities Officer.
In 2006 the national AUT, together with all its local branches, was merged into the University and College Union and ceased to function as an independent organisation.

The records have been arranged chronologically.

Access Information

Records are open to the public, subject to the overriding provisions of relevant legislation, including data protection laws. 24 hours' notice is required to access photographic material.

Acquisition Information

The archive was deposited at the Borthwick Institute in 1991. A further addition was made to the archive in 1993 and at a later date.
