Administrative / Biographical History

The Ruskin Society of Glasgow: Society of the Rose, was founded in c 1879 to meet and discuss the works of the critic John Ruskin (1819-1900). The society met at the Accountants Hall on West Nile Street, Glasgow, Scotland on a fortnightly basis and later at the Glasgow Athenaeum. It was governed by a committee consisting of an honorary president, president, 2 vice presidents, secretary, treasurer, librarian and a small number of ordinary members. The librarian ran a small lending library of Ruskin's works that could be borrowed by members.Papers were presented on Ruskin and his contemporaries who were then discussed. The Society also held an annual Conversazione of music and readings to start the sessions that ran from the autumn to the spring of each year and also arranged excursions. By 1891, the Society had nearly 120 members and in 1896 a similar society was established in Birmingham, England.
