Administrative / Biographical History

These files relate to the BBC branches of the Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union, formerly the Association of Broadcasting Staff. The BBC Staff Association was formed in 1945 from a merger of staff associations. It became the Association of Broadcasting Staff in 1956. In 1974 it became the Association of Broadcasting and Allied Staffs. It amalgamated with the National Association of Theatrical Television and Kine Employees (NATTKE), to form the transitional Entertainment Trades Alliance (ETA) early in 1984. ETA became the Broadcasting and Entertainment Trades Alliance (BETA) on 1 Feb 1985. On 2 January 1991 BETA and the Association of Cinematograph, Television and Allied Technicians became the constituent sections of the Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union.

Access : Open except for files containing personal details. The Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union should be acknowledged if any material is subsequently used.

Archivist's Note

An interim box list has been compiled and is available in paper format in the Centre's searchroom. Some records of the Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union and its predecessors are held by the union itself whilst others have been deposited at the British Film Institute in London.

An authority file exists for the Broadcasting Entertainment Cinematograph and Theatre Union (GB 152 AAR1210).
