York Community Settlement Players
Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The York Community Settlement Players grew out of the York St Mary's Educational Settlement which was established in 1909.
From 1922 they existed as an independent group. The York Settlement Community Players was set up with the objective of "developing knowledge of and ability in the dramatic art by familiarity with and presentation of the best plays by past and present dramatists". The group paid attention to all aspects of dramatic productions - sound diction, stage deportment, costume making and stage properties.
In 1986 and 1987, the group performed a specially adapted version of the York Mystery Plays at the Arts Centre on Micklegate.
The group continues to perform across a variety of venues in York today.
