Scope and Content

Social events including dinners and other visiting, entertainments, meetings of the Chinese reading club, church attendance and journeys outside Peking to the Western Hills and to search for deserted villages. Records arrivals and departures of acquaintances including Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) staff. From June onwards the entries are sparse and infrequent.

MARCH Posted to Peking. 'Was ever such luck',21; meets John Walter, new chief manager of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC).

APRIL Departure of Thomas Jackson, former chief manager. 'We shall never have such another friend & manager.' 12. Addis leaves Hong Kong for Peking and on arrival meets E.G. (Guy) Hillier, then in charge of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) Peking office, Walter Hillier of the customs office, Sir Nicholas O'Conor, the secretary of the British legation and Sir Robert Hart, Inspector-General of the Chinese Maritime Customs.
